The rise of Agriculture 4.0, also known as smart farming, is a farming approach that highly incorporates digital technology to improve farm productivity while lowering the costs of inputs. Some of its forms are Blockchain, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Reality.
In the Philippines, the local government headed by the Department of Agriculture is aiming for a 2.5% growth this year through further integration of technology in agriculture to improve production, connectivity, and delivery of service to beneficiaries. By setting sight and closely working on the upgraded implementation of 'Agriculture 4.0', or the fourth agricultural revolution that promotes the use of smart farming technologies, it will give the country a brighter hope for a better 2021 as far as the agriculture industry is concerned.
Just recently, the Agriculture Secretary issued a memorandum to all DA executives, attached agencies and corporations, programs, and regional offices to “pursue an inclusive approach on these key strategies to accelerate the transformation towards a modern and industrialized Philippine agriculture.” DA’s agenda is concise and to be able to achieve the goal, digital agriculture strategies will also be implemented. It includes accelerating the completion of the National Farmers and Fishers Registry System, upscaling e-Kadiwa by having a logistics component to be able to easily transport produce to urban markets and using satellite technology to expand crop insurance coverage and estimates on crop damages and losses resulting from natural disturbances.
